Oct 16, 2025: Why Diwali 2025 falls on 21st October ?
Based on scriptural references below, Diwali should be celebrated on Tuesday, 21 October 2025.
In ‘Vikram Samvat 2082,’ ‘Kartik Krishna Amavasya’ will commence before sunrise in Jammu on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, continuing until 5:55 pm. Sunset in Jammu will occur at 5:47 pm on the same day.
The ‘Swati Nakshatra,’ recommended for ‘Maha Lakshmi’ worship, will begin at 10:59
pm following the conclusion of ‘Chaitra Nakshatra.’ The notable Yoga named ‘Dhvaksh’—a
combination of ‘Chitra’ and ‘Swati Nakshatra’ occurring on Tuesday—is believed to confer
advantages to the ruling authority and its citizens. The accumulation of valuable items such
as gold, silver, diamond, and emerald during this period is considered auspicious for future
benefits. According to the ‘Brahma Purana,’ ‘Amavasya’ extending from ‘Pradosh Kaal’ to
‘Nishith Kaal’ is regarded as highly favorable.
According to this scripture, the 'Saklyapadait Amavasya' will occur from ‘Pradosh Kaal’ to ‘Vishesh Kaal,’
an event also referred to as ‘Sakala.’ As
a result, Diwali is scheduled to be observed across the country on Tuesday, 21 October 2025.
“दिनद्वयेसत्त्वाऽसत्वेपरा” (तिथिनिर्णय)
According to other scriptures such as ‘Nirnayasindhu,’ ‘Dharmasindhu,’ ‘Purusharthachintamani’
and ‘Tithi Nirnay,’ if the duration of the new moon during the ‘Pradosh Kaal’ occurs similarly
on two days, then the worship of Goddess ‘Maha Lakshmi’ on the second day—from sunrise
to sunset on the new moon day (which includes Pradosh Kaal)—is recommended.
There are discussions and speculations regarding the celebration of Diwali on
October 20th. Should Diwali be observed on this date, which differs from traditional
scriptural guidance, it raises questions about activities such as ‘Annakut’ and ‘Govardhan Puja’
which are scheduled for October 22nd. Consequently, the festival period would extend from five
to six days, deviating from its conventional duration.
Therefore, I recommend that the Indian community observe Diwali on October 21, 2025.
